The call went out for entries several months ago and it only took a few weeks for 4th 1-3 year great western showdown to fill up, so folks were nervously looking at the long-term forecasts hoping the cowboys and cowgirls could come west on Sunday.
Thankfully, things were grey but only a little bit of mist was in the air for most of the day, so the 18 triples teams got their full four games in.
1st – Flash Gordon, Lorita Ross and Phil Ross from Royal Oak (shown with event sponsor Lindsay Hooke)
2nd Ian Carroll, Brendan Wilson and Kerry Greenhaigh from Orewa
3rd Colleen Short, Lesley McDaid and Brent Fraser (absent) from Blockhouse Bay
The consolation prize went to the Composite team of Warwick Catchpole (Pt Chev), Jean-Claude Fuller (Glen Eden) and Colin Ayris-Webster (GE).
Special awards of wine donated by Lindsay to Agnes Williams for stepping up after an 8am call to help out a team caught short, and “The Lady in the Pink Hat” for staying in costume all day.
A big thanks to our sponsor Lindsay Hooke @ Barfoot & Thompson Glen Eden, Brett O’Riley for his speech to the players, Sharon Stewart for running the event, all the club members who volunteered to make sure the day went so well, and the junior bowlers of Auckland who supported the event. See you next year!
