3D Cup Tournament Sunday 28 May 2023

Sponsor: Boyne Drummond

The 3D Tournament is usually played in December, but due to unforeseen circumstances last year there was a change of date, so on a wintery Sunday morning the club was ready with some fresh & crispy weather. The sun was out but the weather forecast for the afternoon was rain, which luckily didn’t happen till later in the evening.

Previously a members only tournament, the GEBC Committee decided this year to open to other clubs once members had first option to enter. This allowed players from Block House Bay, New Lynn, Titirangi, Ellerslie, Mt Wellington, Te Atatu, Grey Lynn and Pringle Park to join in on the green with a total of 16 teams participating on the day.

The weather stayed in our favour. From midday onwards the wind picked up and a bit challenging for the bowlers. Everyone enjoyed the day and the banter from each other.

Background
The 3 D cup was donated in 1977 after the death of Jack Duncan. It was presented to the club by his wife Ada and his two mates, Merv Drever and Jack Drummond in memory of Jack.

Merv Drever was treasurer from 1968 – 74 and then did another 6 year stint from 1983- 1989. He was made a life member in 1986.

Jack (Bulldog) Drummond was president from 1960 -1963 and went on to be Auckland President 1975 -1976, Jack was made a life member in 1974. The Bulldog nick name was due to him being quite obstinate, but a very good administrator who got things done.

A huge thank you to Jack Drummond’s two sons Boyne and Graham (above) and Boyne’s wife Janet who joined us for the presentation of the cup, and to Boyne for his sponsorship of the tournament.

The players appreciated learning about the history of the cup and Boyne’s recollections of earlier days, including that the 3 D’s were all members of the Glen Eden fire brigade and disrupted tournaments when the alarm went off mid tournament and they had to run to station which used to be located up the hill behind the Playhouse Theatre. Jack also had the unfortunate position of being fire chief in 1968 when there was a fire in the fire house itself.
